Why we do it
What is it that drives us to do this work?
Our Purpose is to bring about a change in human organisational and personal behaviours to make a difference in health, safety and environmental performance. We aim to create ‘Cultures of Care’ where ethics and values are the signposts to organisational excellence and outstanding performance, adding value no matter what economic challenges are faced.
Our Values – what is most important to us is that we act from a place of humanity, integrity and competence in bringing about change.
Our Aims are to model ‘care’ and to take our clients on a journey where they too can embody ‘care’ in their business - in all their decisions, processes and behaviours. We use our Concept of Care™ as the catalyst for achieving HSE excellence and making change happen. We enable our clients to create the future they want to see in the workplace – where people are valued, care is demonstrated and excellence is achieved.
Optimus is Latin for ‘excellence’ and the idea behind ‘Seventh Generation’ in our company name comes from the Great Law of the Iroquois. The Iroquois are a Native American nation. Their law states “In every deliberation, we must consider the impact of the seventh generation ...even if it requires having skin as thick as the bark of a pine”. The Great Law of the Iroquois League imposed a duty upon leaders to “have always in view not only the present, but also the coming generations, even those whose faces are yet beneath the surface of the ground – the unborn of the future Nation”.
Optimus Seventh Generation is not a conventional HSE management company. What we do has great meaning for us. We want organisational life to reflect the same concern for individuals, communities and the environment as that stated by the Iroquois. With the current economic climate putting pressure on organisations and businesses, it is even more important now that we do what is right, because this way leads to efficient, safe, environmentally-sound and caring business practices. Promoting a Concept of Care™ is our way of introducing a new generation of HSE thinking. And it works....
The core of Optimus’ behavioural approach lies in what we’ve termed ‘A Concept of Care'.
What do we mean by ‘care’? Considering a If you consider the dictionary definition of ‘care’ you’ll find the following:
- To have regard and consideration for
- To provide for physical needs, help or comfort
- Protective or supervisory control
- Guardianship
- To protect, provide for, tend, watch over
We find that when this core facets of human behaviour is present in the daily interactions of managers and workforces, something quite miraculous happens – businesses and teams become focused, optimistic, motivated and – interestingly – successful, safe and profitable. People enjoy going to work and get a sense of achievement from what they do. In Optimus, we’d aspire to create a positive culture in
- Health - where people care about their own and their employees’ health
- Safety - where people care about the safety of themselves and others
- Environment - where people care for the planet and our collective future, reconnecting with the natural world and taking steps to protect it from their own and other’s actions
Through giving individuals and organisations the skills and motivation to care, we aim to create cultures of care. Through our work, the Optimus team want to leave the world a better place than they found it. We are sure many of the leaders within our client’s organisations share this philosophy.
