Results with a North Sea Operator:
The operator was experiencing an event (an injury or near miss) every 3 days and from a reliability perspective they were experiencing plant trips every 3.3 days. Their BBS system was suffering from poor workforce participation and was referred to as “Blackmail Based Safety”. They were in the midst of several major long-term offshore projects involving up to 400 extra project/ construction personnel when we first started to work with the operator
Change achieved over 20 months:
- 13 months and 2 million hours Lost Time Incident (LTI) Free (this included two major offshore projects).
- 29% reduction in Total Recordable Case Frequency (TRCF)
- 68% reduction in First Aid Injuries (FAI)
- Extended periods totally injury free (102 days in the second half of 2008 and 72 days in the early part of 2009)
- Significant increase in Near Miss and Hazardous Condition reporting
- Exceptional participation in their new, bespoke BBS system, with a positive intervention culture under a 'concept of care'
- Plant trips reduced by more than 300%, now occurring every 11 days on average, with a record trip-free run of 28 days
- Reports from recent visiting construction personnel and safety reps that the installation was 'the safest we've ever worked on' commented that 'management take safety seriously – we feel looked after here'
