Every year ConocoPhillips embark on a shutdown of their ‘J’ Block facilities in the Central North Sea – namely the Judy and Jade platforms and Joanne sub-sea template. As part of ConocoPhillips commitment to the health & safety of individuals and concern for the environment, a ‘Safety Away Day’ is organised with both onshore and offshore personnel and senior management in attendance. The 2008 ‘Shutdown Safety Away Day’ was organised well in advance and the agenda for the day was well defined with 3rd party specialist input confirmed. Disaster struck at the last minute when our main 3rd party presenters called-off, leaving us with a gaping hole in our programme.

The day was saved, when a call was made to ‘Optimus-SHE’ and a request made for their last minute assistance. Eddie McCulloch (Director no-less!!) committed his services for the day and delivered a presentation which ‘dove-tailed’ exactly with the theme of the day, which was ‘Safety Mind-set of the Individual’. As with the rest of the day, Eddie’s delivery ensured audience participation and was well received by all.

I am delighted to report that the 2008 shutdown was delivered successfully, on-time and with zero injuries or incidents, an achievement which we are confident was made possible by strength of the message delivered at the ‘Shutdown Safety away Day’.
