Motivate

You can lead a horse to water, but is it thirsty?

We always explain why we/the client are looking for a change. What would it take to get everyone on board – and to want to go on a journey towards that change? Rather than put attention on what the change is, we explain the change is needed. If we can motivate people towards why they are doing something, we have a better chance of influencing them to come on the journey. We create a readiness for change by ensuring that the right conditions for change exist – both in people’s minds and in the workplace - and that people are receptive to something different.

This phase is all about getting people and teams to understand their potential for excellence and providing them with the drive and energy to make the change.

How we do it

We develop programmes that blend psychology, social behaviours, relevant HSE work situations and practical, down to earth language to get key messages across:

  • Explaining how psychological and physiological processes can both help and hinder our efforts to keep safe
  • Putting the personal case for why we need to actively care for each other and the environment
  • Influencing individuals at an ‘identity’ level rather than a behavioural level (eg focusing on being a safety leader rather than doing something in a specific way)
  • Sharing best practice from high reliability organisations
  • Looking at what’s possible and challenging limiting beliefs about the inevitability of incidents occuring

Phase 2 is a significant step in the change process, in that it prepares people to contemplate change within themselves and gives the individual and the organisation a common language for talking about future reality. Our language creates our reality, and the sooner we introduce a new language and embed it into everyday working life, the quicker the take-up of new behaviours. The language we use engages the ‘whole person’, creating emotional buy-in as well as building a rational case for change.
